Country Analysis Executive Summary: Venezuela

(Mon, 30 Nov 2020) Although one of the original five large oil-producing countries that created the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 1960, Venezuela fell to the fourth-smallest producer among OPEC’s 13 members in 2019, ranked higher than only Congo-Brazzaville, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea.

Gabon Country Analysis Brief

(Mon, 30 Nov 2020) Gabon is a mature oil producer in West Africa and among the top five oil producers in sub-Saharan Africa. Gabon enacted the 2019 Hydrocarbon Law to reinvigorate its oil market and support its 12th bidding round for the allocation of offshore blocks.

Country Analysis Brief: Mexico

(Mon, 30 Nov 2020) Mexico is a major producer of petroleum and other liquids and is one of the largest providers of U.S. oil imports. Mexico’s oil production has declined since 2004, as has the country’s position as a net oil exporter.

2018 CBECS Preliminary Results

(Wed, 18 Nov 2020) The first estimates from the 2018 Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) provide information about the U.S. commercial building stock, such as building size and activity, year of construction, and geographic region.

Yemen Country Analysis Brief

(Fri, 13 Nov 2020) Although Yemen is not a major hydrocarbon producer relative to several other countries in the Middle East, the country has sufficient oil and natural gas resources for both domestic demand and exports. However, Yemen's difficult security environment hinders the production and transport of those resources.

Philippines Country Analysis Brief

(Thu, 12 Nov 2020) The Philippines is a net energy importer, even though its consumption levels are low relative to its Southeast Asian neighbors and it produces fossil fuels domestically. Renewable energy sources account for a significant share of electricity generation.

South Korea Country Analysis Brief

(Fri, 06 Nov 2020) South Korea relies on imports to meet nearly all of its fossil fuel consumption as a result of insufficient domestic resources. The country is one of the world’s leading energy importers and ranks among the world’s top five importers of liquefied natural gas (LNG), coal, and total petroleum liquids.

Japan Country Analysis Brief

(Fri, 30 Oct 2020) Japan is the world's largest liquefied natural gas importer and ranks in the top five countries for the highest coal imports and consumption of crude oil and petroleum products. Japan is gradually bringing back nuclear power generation after a complete shutdown of the industry following the Fukushima accident, and the country continues to rely on fossil fuel imports to supply most of its energy needs.

The Energy Efficiency Gap and Energy Price Responsiveness in Food Processing

(Thu, 22 Oct 2020) This report estimates stochastic frontier energy demand functions with non-public, plant-level data from the U.S. Census Bureau to measure the energy efficiency gap and energy price elasticities in the food processing industry. Estimates of the energy efficiency gap are smaller but empirically more reasonable when using this new estimation methodology. Own-prices are generally inelastic with little evidence of fuel or electricity substitution.

Handbook of Energy Modeling Methods

(Wed, 14 Oct 2020) EIA’s new Handbook of Energy Modeling Methods explains, in plain language, the processes EIA uses to produce long- and short-term projections of key energy market statistics. Today EIA released Handbook documentation for most of the World Energy Projection System (WEPS), along with some parts of the National Energy Modeling System (NEMS) and the Short-Term Energy Forecasting System (STIFS). Additional Handbook sections will become available in the coming months.
